Stuhlwerk (Chair works) • On the paintings of Claudia Betzin

The focus of Claudia Betzin’s art has been on the material world for several years now, it concentrates on the abstraction of the object chair. Taken from the mundane existence and put into the realms of art, the chair acts as a metaphor in the sense of the ambiguous ways it can be handled. Floating in worlds of colour, in the context of figurative depiction the chair is now a pictorial object and allows far-reaching associations. The chair is also transformed into an object of art by becoming a picture ground. The wooden seat and the seemingly organic form of the back-rest take come to hold the worlds of colour, in addition to the canvas.
